Skills Taught:
Traditionally there were two kinds of spinning styles (and yarns) in the western spinning tradition: worsted and woolen. Worsted refers to yarns spun from parallel fibers that have been combed (not carded) to remove shorter bits and spun with a short draw to keep the fibers in their parallel alignment. Woolen yarns are spun from carded fibers in a more airy, random arrangement.
Traditionally, worsted yarns are spun with a short draw from combed top. Yarn spun in the worsted style can be made from wool or a blend of other animal or plant fibers. While confusing terminology, “Worsted” here refers to the fiber prep and spinning style – not thickness of the yarn. Worsted -spun yarns are generally characterized as having good drape yet durable, compared to other spinning methods.
This course will cover exercises for several worsted drafting methods. Please, bring your favorite wheel to travel with for this three hour course, as well as any worsted prepped fiber you might have available (approximately 2-4 ounces of combed top or braid). Limited fiber will be made available for the course. Feel free to bring any other items necessary for your specific wheel.
